Bill Lindau
designs and crafts heirloom quality rocking chairs and one-of-a-kind
studio Art Furniture.
He lives in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina, home to some of
the finest hardwood forests on the planet. Most of his work is done with
domestic hardwoods such as Walnut, Cherry and Curly Maple. He uses little exotic hardwoods.
Art Furniture
Each of Bill's pieces of furniture is unique. In the gallery, there are always several pieces
of his work for sale. In addition, he keeps a design book of his work in Main St.
gallery to help customers identify his unique elements which he can combine into a totally unique piece
of furniture.
Custom orders are usually filled within four to nine months and require a 50%
deposit to begin construction and the balance is paid before shipment. The pieces can be crated carefully
for shipment if needed.
Rocking Chairs
Not many visitors to Main Street Gallery leave without sitting in one of Bill's chairs. The
fact that they are beautiful is obvious but it is not until you sit in one that you appreciate
Bill's designs. Comfort is Bill's top priority. The seats are coopered to allow for the necessary
curvature that gently cradles your seat and the backrests are curved to provide subtle lumbar
support. The term coopered refers to a technique where pieces of wood are joined together
with slight bevels cut on their edges so that they form a circle. This technique allows for a
curvature which would only otherwise be possible using very thick pieces of wood.
The basic design of Bill's chairs is influenced by the celebrated Sam Maloof, who in turn
was influenced by Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, both Danish designer/chairmakers.
